Getting Here and Getting Around... MAP
By taxi, the travel time between the airport and downtown
Boston takes approximately 15 minutes. Fares are charged at a flat
rate, plus 1.50 USD airport surcharge and a toll of 3 USD, if travel
through the harbor tunnels is necessary. Many of the major hotels also
offer a shuttle service to and from the airport, with an approximate
fare of 7.50 USD. Buses, trains and the subway are easy to use and are
a cost-effective choice for the downtown journey. For flying to other
US cities you can often arrange a lower priced flight by travelling
from Providence airport, Rhode Island, only 30 minutes by train south
of Boston. The streets of downtown Boston are old, narrow and winding.
If you can possibly avoid having to drive yourself around Boston, do
so! The city’s normally eccentric traffic patterns have been
complicated further by a multi-billion dollar construction project,
designed to modernise the Expressway that runs through town. the "Big
Dig" has been years in the making and is likely to cause delays, dust,
noise and detours until the year 2004.Take a taxi or use the ‘T’'. It
is not necessary to drive in the city center as public transport is
frequent and reliable. However, if planning a trip out to the Salem,
Concord or Plymouth areas, driving is probably the best option and
there are plenty of rental firms offering a daily tariff.
